PART 4
SMART MAMAS ARE SMART ABOUT MONEY:
Get Control of Your Finances (and Pass It On)
INTRODUCTION
We’ve lured you in talking about cute clothes and yummy food, but it’s time to get right to the heart of the issue. Because, sure, you can learn to be a smart shopper, you can save dough here and there, but until you get your budgets in order, introduce money into family conversation, and teach your children how to have a healthy relationship with all things financial, you’re not really being a smart mom.
So. A few questions:
Is your financial house in absolutely perfect order? Are you confident about your budgets? Do you have clear financial plans? Do you save for emergencies, retirement, college?
If so, we’re willing to wager that your closets are pin-neat, shirts and pants hanging by color and style; your kitchen counters are sparkling; your hair is immaculate; and your manicured nails never dare to chip. In other words, we’re betting you don’t exist.
Come on. No one is all that.
And no one is totally comfortable talking about money.
Freedom, opportunity, comfort, security, power, control, frustration, fear are all dispensed at the money machine. How do we earn it? Who has riches? Who doesn’t have a dime? How much do we really need? How do we manage what we have or, as the case may be, what we don’t have? Let’s be honest: Money worries of some form permeate the air of every household. If you’re reading this book, you’ve got ’em. And just like you’re the most important influence on your kids when it comes to dressing and eating, you’re also their model when it comes to learning good money habits.
Remember in everything we do and say, we pass on our values to our kiddos. Often this happens subtly, insidiously, without our conscious thought. Money is no exception. What message are you sending when you’re shoving unopened bills into the drawer or trash? Or when you implore your little tyke not to tell Daddy about that impulsive shoe purchase at the mall? (Yes, we know: You’re racked by guilt, but how could you resist? They were obscenely cute.) Or when you’re gossiping with your friends about the rich guy down the street who dates all those hot young things.
Your kids are listening. They’re watching.
Take a vow today: to find financial stability by getting your own house in order, to take responsibility for teaching your children about (all kinds of) dough, and to integrate money sense into your family’s daily life.
